La 1ª Conferencia Internacional sobre el Aforismo, titulada Magnum In Parvo (“Grande en lo pequeño”), se celebró del 24 al 25 de octubre de 2025 en la Universidad de Wrocław, Instituto de Filología Alemana.
El evento fue organizado en el marco del programa Humboldt Kolleg por la Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum – Sede Wrocław, en cooperación con la Sociedad Germano-Polaca de la Universidad de Wrocław y el Instituto de Filología Eslava de la Universidad de Potsdam.
Esta singular reunión académica reunió a escritores, aforistas y académicos de renombre de doce países: Polonia, Estados Unidos, Alemania, Italia, Serbia, Croacia, Israel, Canadá, Finlandia, Rumanía, Bulgaria...
El objetivo de la conferencia fue explorar, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, las dimensiones estética, filosófica, lingüística y cultural del aforismo como forma breve literaria.
Marco organizativo
El impulsor y presidente del Comité Organizador fue Andrzej Majewski, reconocido escritor y aforista polaco.
La conferencia fue inaugurada oficialmente por el Prof. Tomasz Małyszek, Director del Instituto de Filología Alemana de la Universidad de Wrocław.
Integraban el Comité Organizador:

El Comité Científico estuvo presidido por el Prof. Wojciech Kunicki, e integrado por el Dr. Jörg Bernig (Alemania), Dr. Friedemann Spicker y Jürgen Wilbert (Archivo Alemán del Aforismo – DAphA), Utz Rachowski (Alemania) y varios académicos polacos y alemanes.
Desarrollo de la conferencia
Durante los dos días, la conferencia se desarrolló en varias sesiones temáticas: Histórico-Teórica, Traducción, Práctica (Sesión de Autores) y una Sesión para Jóvenes Investigadores.
El programa abrió con la conferencia magistral del Prof. James Geary (Universidad de Harvard, EE. UU.) titulada “Una defensa de los aforismos”, que brindó el marco teórico para los debates subsiguientes sobre el papel y la relevancia del pensamiento aforístico en la cultura contemporánea.
Luego, Andrzej Majewski (Polonia, Universidad de Wrocław) presentó su ponencia “Hipócrates y Marco Aurelio: hitos de la literatura aforística europea” acompañada de una exposición de raras ediciones antiguas: Meditaciones de Marco Aurelio (Venecia, 1543) y Aforismos de Hipócrates (Ámsterdam, 1685).

Natalia Kozłowska: “¿Fue Leopold Staff un aforista?”, Universidad de Varmia y Mazuria en Olsztyn.
La Sesión de Investigadores, moderada por la Dra. Ewa Wojno-Owczarska y el Dr. Marcin Miodek, reunió aportes valiosos de jóvenes estudiosos de Polonia, Canadá y EE. UU., entre ellos Frederick Abrams (EE. UU.) sobre el rol del aforismo en la música contracultural de los años 60 y 70 y George Murray (Canadá) sobre elementos aforísticos en la poesía de Leonard Cohen.
Actividades complementarias
El programa académico se acompañó de varios eventos artísticos y culturales:
Concierto en la iglesia gótica de San Vicente y Santiago en Wrocław,
Velada literaria y aforística en el Club de Música y Literatura (Plac Kościuszki 10),
Exposición artística de Barbara John, “Aforismos. Pequeños formatos pictóricos”,
y la ceremonia de premiación del Concurso Internacional de Limericks, presidido por el Prof. Jan Miodek, con los jurados Urszula Zybura y Andrzej Majewski.
Conclusiones y relevancia
La conferencia Magnum In Parvo reafirmó que el aforismo, como forma condensada de pensamiento filosófico y poético, sigue siendo un componente vital de las humanidades modernas.
Los debates pusieron de relieve el carácter interdisciplinar del aforismo, enlazando literatura, filosofía, lingüística y reflexión social.
Los participantes subrayaron la necesidad de continuar la cooperación internacional y de crear una red de estudiosos dedicados al aforismo en las diversas tradiciones culturales.
Los organizadores anunciaron que la segunda edición de la Conferencia Internacional sobre el Aforismo se celebrará en 2026, nuevamente en Wrocław, con mayor amplitud temática y geográfica.

Report on the 1st International Aphorism Conference “Magnum In Parvo”
University of Wrocław, October 24–25, 2025
The 1st International Aphorism Conference, titled Magnum In Parvo (“Great in Small”), was held from October 24 to 25, 2025, at the University of Wrocław, Institute of German Philology.
The event was organized within the framework of the Humboldt Kolleg program by the Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum – Wrocław Branch, in cooperation with the German-Polish Society of the University of Wrocław and the Institute of Slavic Philology, University of Potsdam.
This unique academic meeting brought together renowned writers, aphorists, and scholars from twelve countries: Poland, the United States, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Israel, Canada, Finland, Romania, Bulgaria....
The aim of the conference was to explore, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the aesthetic, philosophical, linguistic, and cultural dimensions of aphorism as a short literary form.
Organizational Framework
The originator and Chair of the Conference Committee was Andrzej Majewski , a well-known Polish writer and aphorist.
The conference was officially opened by Prof. Tomasz Małyszek, Director of the Institute of German Philology at the University of Wrocław.
The Organizing Committee included:

Prof. Mirosław Miller (Central Board of SHP),
Dr. Marcin Miodek (University of Wrocław), and
Andrzej Ociepa, former Director of the Public Library in Wrocław.
The Scientific Committee was chaired by Prof. Wojciech Kunicki, and included Dr. Jörg Bernig (Germany), Dr. Friedemann Spicker and Jürgen Wilbert (German Aphorism Archive – DAphA), Utz Rachowski (Germany), and several Polish and German scholars.
Conference Proceedings
The two-day conference consisted of several thematic sessions: Historical-Theoretical, Translational, Practical (Authors’ Session), and a Young Researchers’ Session.
The program opened with a keynote lecture by Prof. James Geary (Harvard University, USA) entitled “A Defense of Aphorisms,” which provided a theoretical foundation for the discussions that followed on the role and significance of aphoristic thought in contemporary culture.
Next, Andrzej Majewski (Poland, University of Wrocław) delivered his lecture “Hippocrates and Marcus Aurelius: Milestones of European Aphorism Literature,” accompanied by a presentation of rare old prints – Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (Venice, 1543) and Aphorisms by Hippocrates (Amsterdam, 1685).

The Researchers’ Session, moderated by Dr. Ewa Wojno-Owczarska and Dr. Marcin Miodek, featured insightful papers by emerging scholars from Poland, Canada, and the USA, including Frederick Abrams (USA) on the role of aphorisms in the countercultural music of the 1960s and 1970s, and George Murray (Canada) on aphoristic elements in Leonard Cohen’s poetry.
Accompanying Events
Several artistic and cultural events accompanied the academic program:
- A concert at the Gothic Church of St. Vincent and St. James in Wrocław,
- A literary and aphoristic evening at the Music and Literature Club (Plac Kościuszki 10),
- An art exhibition by Barbara John, “Aphorisms. Small Painting Forms,”
- and the award ceremony of the International Limerick Competition, chaired by Prof. Jan Miodek, with jurors Urszula Zybura and Andrzej Majewski.
Conclusions and Significance
The conference Magnum In Parvo reaffirmed that aphorism, as a form of condensed philosophical and poetic thought, remains a vital component of modern humanities.
Discussions highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the aphorism, bridging literature, philosophy, linguistics, and social reflection.
Participants emphasized the need for continued international cooperation and for establishing a network of scholars dedicated to the study of aphorisms across various cultural traditions.
Organizers announced that the second edition of the International Aphorism Conference will be held in 2026, again in Wrocław, with an expanded thematic and geographic scope.
