The Gala is Coming Soon

In the editorial of the September Bulletin, we discussed the Humor Sapiens 2024 Contest, which closed on the 10th of that month. Days passed amid the reception of entries (the last moments are all of our favorites to submit work. Why this is so is a mystery, but it’s true). In the last 10 days, nearly a third of the total number of entries arrived, after six months of being open for submissions. But that was just a detail. What impressed us the most was the final number of entries: 691, created by 351 artists from 65 countries! For our first International Contest, the turnout exceeded expectations. So, in terms of quantity, we believe it was a success. But qualitatively, it was as well. This will be seen publicly in the Digital Catalog that we will showcase on our website with the finalist entries. And what renowned authors! Magnificent works tackling the mandatory theme of the contest: “Technology and Education.” Of course, there were always a few that only touched on technology or only on education. Worse still, a few entries had nothing to do with either concept. But that’s normal. Some creators search their archives for older, non-awarded works and, if they think they vaguely fit the requested theme, they submit them. And a few send their work without worrying whether they meet the contest rules or not. Still, everyone wins, because at the very least, if they don't make it into the prize-winning selection or the finalists, the jury will still see the work, know or remember the author, and who knows if that might help with another project. Everyone wins in these contests. Finally, we have the Jury’s decision. A distinguished Jury, composed of internationally multi-awarded cartoonists Izabela Kowalska (Poland), David Vela (Spain), and Ángel Boligán (Cuba-Mexico), plus Alex and Pepe Pelayo, the founding and producing team of Humor Sapiens. On October 11, the Award Ceremony will take place, and the exhibition will also open. Where will it be? At the Colegio Colonial de Pique in Santiago, Chile, one of the sponsors of the Contest. Why there? Because it will also be the award ceremony for the National School Graphic Humor Contest, aimed at students from educational centers across the country. This first school contest had 240 entries from 238 students attending various public and private schools throughout Chile. The message conveyed by these works was also impressive, addressing the same theme of "Technology and Education." As expected with young participants, most opted for comic strips, and the main topics were the use and misuse of mobile phones and virtual classes. These works will be equally enjoyed later in the Humor Sapiens Digital Catalog and also in the Exhibition on October 11 at the Award Gala. And we close with some news: it is very likely that the Ministry of Education of Chile will sponsor the National School Contest for 2025. Complete happiness. We want to deeply thank the contestants, the Jury, the sponsors, and the voluntary collaborators (teachers, librarians, website directors, etc.) who made this dream possible. But we also want to thank the readers of humorsapiens.com and especially the readers of these Bulletins, because we are sure that the creation, consistency, and recognition of the website and the bulletin have been essential for artists’ confidence in participating in both contests. And that has been possible thanks to the generosity and loyalty of our readers, whose numbers are growing daily. To all of them, our infinite gratitude as well. They—you—are the reason why we so gladly write these lines as an editorial to inform you, as in this case. For instance, today we present for your consideration an interview conducted by our editor with the renowned French cartoonist Bernard Bouton, General Secretary of FECO (European Federation of Cartoonists). You can also enjoy the photographs that Cuban Francisco Puñal brings us, introducing the English photographer Gerrard Gethings. And Spanish writer Félix Caballero dives into a deep and challenging topic in his article “Is Humor Serious?” “The Humor of All Time” is the theme addressed by Argentine Alejandro Rojo Vivot in his historical sketches on Chilean humor. And to close the first part of the Bulletin, Mexican Ricardo Guzmán Wolffer reviews the work of the great British literary humorist Tom Sharpe. Then comes the second part, full of variety, with popular sections like humor history milestones, news, anniversaries, famous quotes, contests, events, scientific research, posthumous tributes, and more. We hope you enjoy the Digital Catalog that will soon appear on our site, featuring the finalists of our Contests (both international and national school competitions). And we hope you also enjoy this Humor Sapiens Bulletin and that it makes you reflect. It is an honor to work for you. Create, think, and live with humor!

In the editorial of the last September Bulletin we addressed the topic of the Humor Sapiens 2024 Contest that closed on the 10th of that month.

Well, the days passed in the middle of receiving works (the last moments are the favorite moments for all of us to send works. Why is a mystery, but that's how it is). In the last 10 days, almost a third of the total number of works arrived, after 6 months of the admission period being open.

But the above was a detail. The most impressive thing for us was that final number of works: 691 created by 351 artists from 65 countries!

To be our first International Competition, the call exceeded expectations.

So quantitatively we believe it has been a success. But qualitatively too. It will already be seen publicly in the Digital Catalog that we will show on our site. Magnificent works that address the mandatory topic of the contest: “Technology and education.” Of course, there have always been some whose content only covers technology, or only covers education. And worse, a few works have nothing to do with both concepts. But it's normal. Some creators search their archives for old, non-awarded works and if they think it has something to do with the requested topic, they send it. And still others send without worrying about whether or not they violate the rules of the contest. And it is because you always win, because at the very least, if it does not enter the selection of the winners, or the finalists, at least the jury will see the work, know or remember the author and who knows if that could serve as help for another project. Everyone wins in contests.

Finally, we now have the jury's verdict. A luxury Jury, made up of the internationally multi-award-winning cartoonists Izabela Kowalska (Poland), David Vela (Spain) and Ángel Boligan (Cuba-Mexico), plus Alex and Pepe Pelayo, the founding team and director of Humor Sapiens.

On October 11th there will be the Awards Ceremony, where the exhibition will also be inaugurated. Where will it be? At the Colonial College of Pique in Santiago de Chile, one of the sponsors of the Contest. But why there? Because it will also be the award ceremony for the National School Graphic Humor Contest, aimed at students from educational centers throughout the country.

This first contest had a participation of 240 works by 238 students who study in multiple public and private schools throughout Chile. The message of these works has also been impressive, addressing the same topic of “technology and education.” Of course, as expected of the boys, the majority leaned toward comics and the main contents were the use and abuse of mobile phones and virtual classes. These works will be enjoyed in the same way - later - in the Digital Catalog of Humor Sapiens, in addition, in the Exhibition on the 11th at the Awards Gala.

And we close with news: it is very likely that the Chilean Ministry of Education will sponsor the National School Contest for the year 2025. Total happiness.

We want to deeply thank the contestants, the Jury, the sponsors, the volunteer collaborators (teachers, librarians, website directors, etc.), who have made the materialization of this dream possible. But we also want to thank the readers of humorsapiens.com and especially the readers of these newsletters, because we are sure that the creation, consistency and recognition of the page and the newsletter has been essential for the trust of the artists to participate in both contests. And that has been possible due to the generosity and loyalty of our readers, who are increasing every day. To all of them our infinite gratitude as well.

They - you - are the reason why it is with such pleasure that we always write these lines as an editorial to inform you, as in this case.

For example, today we are putting forward for consideration an interview that our editor conducted with the renowned French cartoonist Bernard Bouton, general secretary of FECO (European Federation of Cartoonists).

But you will also be able to have fun with the photographs that Cuban Francisco Puñal brings us this time when he introduces us to the English photographer Gerrard Gethings. And the Spanish Félix Caballero delves into a deep and difficult topic in his article “Is humor serious?”

“Humor has always been there” is the topic addressed by the Argentine Alejandro Rojo Vivot, within his historical sketches on Chilean humor.

And to close the first part of the Bulletin, the Mexican Ricardo Guzmás Wolffer reviews the work of the great British literary humorist Tom Sharpe.

Then comes the second part full of variety, with sections as popular as the. milestones in the history of humor, news, anniversaries, famous quotes, contests, events, scientific research, posthumous tributes and more.

We hope you enjoy the Digital Catalog that will appear soon on our site, with the finalists of our Contests (the international one and the Chilean school one).

And we hope you do the same with this Humor Sapiens Newsletter.

It's a pleasure to work for you.

Create, think and live with humor!
