PP: Me imagino.

Interview with Juan García Cerrada

By Pepe Pelayo

The health of a society is measured by the margins it leaves for humor

Today I break the routine in these "dialogues", because I am not interviewing a creator of humor. I am honored to present this time a man who has done a lot for humor in the Spanish language. This is the Executive Secretary of the IQH; that is, from the Quevedo Institute of the Arts of Humor of the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá, who is also a curator, cultural manager, critic and journalist, the Spanish Juan García Cerrada.

I have been lucky enough to share with him on three occasions: when he moderated the online launch of the book “Historias de bufones”, which I published with my friend Ángel Boligán; when he moderated, also online, a tribute that the IQH paid me for my 40 years as a comedian and when he interviewed me about “What is humor?”, for the IQH project and the Elplural.com portal. That, while always contacting us by e-mail. So I can affirm that he is a kind, helpful, welcoming and very professional person in his work. It only hurts me not to have been in Chile when he went and met with my humorist colleagues, but that personal meeting is pending, right, Juan?

Well, but the important thing now is that we have it here so that the humornauts of Humor Sapiens get to know it more and better...

PP: How are you, Juan?

JUAN GARCÍA: Very good, delighted to talk with you, Pepe.

PP: And I with you, my friend. Hey, but before we start tell me, do you like being interviewed?

JUAN GARCÍA: Not especially, but over the years I've gotten used to it.

PP: I guess so. Well, it occurs to me to start with the most logical thing: how did you get into the world of humor?

JUAN GARCÍA: Let's say by chance. As a volunteer for the Vice President for Culture while studying Biology at the University of Alcalá, we received a proposal to make a graphic humor exhibition. Actually, we were not very clear about what it was, so we had to find out about it. And we decided to go ahead with the proposal and for this we presented the initiative to the Rector of the University, D. Manuel Gala, who immediately saw it clearly, but before approving it, he forced us to commit to presenting a broader project on the subject, and not just an exhibition. We are talking about the beginning of the year 92 of the last century and it was the germ of what would later be the graphic humor department of the Foundation and later the Quevedo Institute of the Arts of Humor.

PP: Hey, there's been a lot of water running under the bridge since early days. About that, can you tell us the best fact, situation or moment that you have experienced in your work related to humor, of course? And the worst?

JUAN GARCÍA: There are many. When you enjoy your work there are many satisfying moments. Fortunately. Imagine, Pepe, that you have to be suffering all your working life. Now that would be tragic, at least for me. On the opposite side, the worst, when there have been sentences against humor creators. That saddens me a lot, because I understand that the creation of humor, like the imagination, cannot have limits. Every time one of these events happens, we take a step back in rights and freedoms, and that is sad and dangerous.

PP: Yes, it is sad. I share that emotion with you when we find out about an abuse, an injustice to a colleague. But from the opposite point of view, can you tell us a funny, witty or simply curious anecdote where you have been involved as a protagonist or witness, during your work in humor?

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is when an author, talking to me on the phone, insisted that he wanted to talk to Juan García, and that it couldn't be who he was talking to, because she was a girl. Due to my timbre of voice, it's not the only time something like this has happened to me, but it was the one that insisted the most, and perhaps because it was the first time I thought it was funnier.

PP: Well, maybe you should answer the phone with a very hoarse voice, ha ha. No, but seriously, since you spoke on a personal level: why don't you tell us something that you would like to do in this field that you haven't done yet?

JUAN GARCÍA: Actually, I think there is still a lot to do, but I think there are two things that would make me especially excited. On the one hand, turning the IQH into a center for the exchange of humour, both for researchers and creators. Another is to be able to launch a support program for creators in trouble due to unforeseen situations.

PP: Great idea. It would be a great project. And speaking of creators, based on your experience, what advice could you give to those who are planning to dedicate themselves to humor?

JUAN GARCÍA: First, let them do it, even though the future is not rosy. And to make it easier, prepare to insist, insist and insist.

PP: Good advice. Listen, Juan, now I am going to return to you the question that you once asked me: what is humor for you?

JUAN GARCIA: Hahaha. Well, for me, humor is a way of seeing and feeling life as a human being. Humor is something inherent to the human being and each one of us has a way of interpreting it. Humor makes us more human and that way of interpreting it makes each one of us different, and this diversity brings richness to society.

PP: It makes us more human, of course it does. But for. you, are there limits?

JUAN GARCÍA: As far as creation is concerned, I understand humor as fiction, and as such marked by imagination, and therefore cannot have limits. What happens is that human beings insist on putting limits on everything, even on what does not have limits. And in this attempt to set limits, what we are doing is escaping creativity. And that's not good. The health of a society is measured by the margins it leaves for humor, and the fewer it leaves, the sicker it is. We are at the moment in which society suffers from offenses. That's not good. You can and should make humor out of everything. Another thing is the ability of the creator to achieve it without falling into aggression against the other.

PP: I liked that "offendiditis". Well, to keep us current, how do you see the situation of graphic humor in the world? And in Latin America and Brazil in particular? (they are our biggest followers-readers). And in response to the above, I would like you to tell us about something sad that we have learned about Portugal: the Francisco de Quevedo International Graphic Humor Award has been suspended; they canceled the PortoCartoon and the WPC; It is not known how the situation of the Museo Nacional da Imprenta is and they threaten to cancel the International Biennial “Luis D´Oliveira Guimaraes”.

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, the disappearance of any event/convocation dedicated to humor is bad, and specifically when what for me was the best existing convocation in the world for humor professionals disappears, it is very sad. I trust the ability of the WPC President, Antonio Antunes to relaunch it. It is not the first time that he has been in a compromising situation. The first was when Sintra stopped supporting him, but found an alternative. And I hope that now he will succeed again in the face of the unjustifiable position of those responsible for Caldas da Rainha.

Another totally different case is that of entities that have nothing to do with humor, and that carry out a call with humor as a reference. Which is right. But they should not be treated the same. In Spain there are several calls of great interest, there are the Curuxa awards, from the Museum of Humor in Fene; there is the ELGAR Contest of graphic humor, convened by the Malaga Press Association; and, of course, those of the Quevedo Institute of Humor. The GIN-UAH awards, which were strongly reinforced in the penultimate call, and the Quevedos Ibero-American Graphic Humor Award, which we are fighting to give it stability and hopefully this year will become annual, as agreed with the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs of the Government of Spain.

PP: And how do you see the future of this artistic manifestation?

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, as we say around here, "it's not something to get excited about." We are in a moment of transformation and that is always complicated. Changes are taking place in formats, supports, and the evolution of society as a whole. That implies that things will be lost along the way, but also, I am sure, that they will be gained. That is why I am optimistic.

PP: I am too. But, my dear Juan, let's change focus. Now I am going to move on to some more questions directed at your work at the Quevedo Institute of the Arts of Humor. For example, how did the University of Alcalá de Henares support the creation of the Quevedo Institute of Humor? How was that story?

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, as I told you at the beginning of the interview, Manuel Gala, Rector of the University in 1992 had a lot to do with it. He was clear from the first moment about the importance of humor, and the need for the University to dedicate resources to it, not in vain humor is transversal to all University subjects, and also, like the University itself, it is universal. Gala welcomed the initiative of several students from different disciplines and became the first graphic humor program at a University in the World. Later it grew and became a Department, and finally, in 2010, with Fernando Galván as rector, the Institute was created based on the experience accumulated since 1992. Now the Institute is closely integrated into the University.

PP: What are the most consolidated activities carried out by the IQH? That is, the ones that you think everyone knows, that have the most prestige, the ones that make you feel most proud of what you have achieved.

JUAN GARCÍA: Without a doubt, the one I feel most proud of is the International Exhibition of the Arts of Humor. It must be borne in mind that the Show is not competitive. It doesn't give a prize. However, each year more than 1,000 works are received with the intention of being selected for the central exhibition of the event. Authors from more than 60 countries send material every year responding to our call. It is a very prestigious call. But there is a second basic aspect of Samples. For a long time, the Samples were the meeting point for authors from both sides of the ocean. Authors such as Quino, Mordillo, Ziraldo, Lailson, Nando, Caloi, Fernando Krahn have passed through Alcalá, and of course Spanish authors such as Gin, Serafín, Fer, Forges, Mingote, Chumy Chumez, Quesada, Cabañas, ....and many further. It was the nexus of the groups from Madrid and Barcelona, who only knew about each other's work, but had never seen each other in person. That's what the Sampler got. Right now we have agreements with most Latin American countries, but also with China, Italy, France, Portugal, Greece, Egypt, Pakistan, etc... A wide network, where humor is important. And what is most important, humor as an element of rapprochement, of diplomacy, not as a weapon. There are already too many weapons in the world right now.

PP: Too many, I would also say. I prefer to say that humor is a weapon, that graphic humor is a weapon; a weapon, to destroy the real weapons. And your Institute is an arsenal. However, the largest content of IQH work is directed to graphic humor, but I would love to see it expanded soon to the other Humor Arts. It will be possible?

JUAN GARCIA: Good. That's because we've been working in the field of graphic humor for much longer. As I said, we started in 1992. However, in recent years we have greatly strengthened the other areas. For this we modified the structure of the Institute. Creating three areas: The graphic, the scenic and literary and the academic. Specifically, in this academic part we have created research awards for TFGs, TFMs and Theses that have humor as the basis of the research. And that at this moment they are in their second call. Right now we are working on the creation of a European Research Consortium in which 22 entities from 13 countries are involved. We are working on creating a database of humor researchers. In addition, we are launching exchange projects for both authors (consecrated and in training) and researchers that we want to become a reality between this year and next.

In the last two-three years we have been collaborating with other areas of humour, such as stage, with scriptwriting entities, for example, and we want to continue expanding this collaboration to associations of actors and actresses, etc...

PP: Is it just lack of funding that has prevented you from doing everything you wanted to do?

JUAN GARCÍA: Without a doubt, the economic issue is important, but we also like to consolidate projects. Do not go pecking from one place to another. We prefer to create, consolidate and continue creating in order to continue consolidating. And we like to create projects that support the ones we already have in place. For this reason, it is all very intertwined.

PP: How do you see the IQH working in an ideal world?

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, as a banner of freedom of creation in this field and as a refuge for those who are not in democratic societies and for which their role as creators endangers their lives and that of their families. (Although in my ideal world there would be no non-democratic societies.)

PP: Of course, I have to ask you what is always asked: what are the real plans of the IQH for this 2023?

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, Pepe, throughout the interview I have been telling you about several of these plans. Some more imminent and others in the longer term. Of course, launch the projects for the exchange of creators and researchers. Expand collaboration with associations of actors and actresses and consolidate that of stand-up comedians. But there is another important thing, throughout this year we will hold meetings with creators from various Latin American countries.

PP: Juan, based on your experience, what would you advise us as Humor Sapiens?

JUAN GARCÍA: I don't think I'm a good adviser in these cases. It is always easy to give advice, but it is usually more difficult to follow it. I think the basis of everything is to continue believing in the importance of humor. As I know that you have it very clear, the rest will come, with dedication and perseverance.

PP: And to finish, Juan, what would you like me to have asked you in this interview and that I didn't ask you? Can you answer it now?

JUAN GARCÍA: Well, as I said at the beginning, I'm not a big fan of interviews, and in this one I think we have covered the past, the present and the future. What else is left? Well, if one thing I wanted to say publicly, and that is that all this we are doing is thanks to a wonderful team, small but fantastic and tremendously cohesive. Thanks to all of them.

PP: Well, my friend, thank you once again for your time and effort in sharing this “dialoco” with me.

JUAN GARCÍA: Thank you very much and enjoy the and with humor. And cheers with the work that lies ahead. A hug

PP: I wish you much success in your personal life and in your magnificent work at the IQH.

And may humor continue to guide us!
