Humor in press photography

By Francisco Puñal Suárez

Press photography is fundamental in newspapers because it complements the written information and helps communicate the facts quickly and effectively.

Every day I look through various printed and digital press outlets in search of a photograph with humor that conveys an emotion, an incongruity, an alteration of values, that reflects feelings, the impact of an event, or the reality of a situation in a way that text alone does not always achieve. And it is difficult to find. It is the sports press that provides us with more images of this kind.

It must be said that many of the general photos published in the media are routine, schematic, and this apparent routine is usually not due to a lack of talent, but because the main objective of photojournalism is to document the facts with speed, precision, and clarity. When circumstances allow going further, some photographers manage to create images that are both informative documents and visually extraordinary works.

I am interested in humorous press photos, increasingly scarce, and that are always used appropriately to the context and the informative purpose.

Above all, the photographer who pursues them must be “charged” with a sense of humor and know how to “find” elements where contrast, exaggeration, the ridiculous, imbalance, gestures… stand out, in images that make the news more attractive and encourage readers to engage with the content.

Humorous press photography is positively valued as a resource to illustrate a text, as long as it is used appropriately to the context and the informative purpose.

Its values are diverse: It captures the reader’s attention and makes the content more attractive. It humanizes the information, showing curious or spontaneous situations that bring the news closer to the public. It relieves tension when dealing with less solemn topics, adding a light tone without ceasing to inform. It reinforces the message, since humor can help readers remember the content of the text better. It favors emotional connection with readers, awakening sympathy or complicity.

However, it also has limitations: It is not appropriate for news about tragedies, conflicts, or issues of special sensitivity, where it could be interpreted as disrespectful. It must maintain truthfulness and not manipulate reality to provoke comedy.

In summary, humorous press photography is a valuable resource for illustrating a text when it complements the information, respects the ethical principles of journalism, and is coherent with the subject matter.
