Humor Museums in the World | Uruguay

Uruguay is yet another case of searching for ghosts, in this ephemeral survival of museum spaces linked to humor. No matter how much we investigate, how many questions we ask local artists, we never know the reality. One thing is certain, if it doesn't exist, at least it existed and left its trace on the internet.

In the country's capital, Montevideo, there is no space dedicated to these arts. Right? I don't know, but I think the statement is correct. We have to travel to the south of the country, more specifically to the city of Minas (Lavallejas) to discover that, at least in the past, there was an intention to honor the most important artist in its history - Julio E. Suárez 'Peloduro'. This work was done by the Fundación "Lolita Rubial" and, as far as we know, the Museum was installed in the Lavalleja Theater.

Let's see what we can describe, through what we found on the internet. It all began on May 29, 1992, being named Museo del Humor y la Historieta Julio E. Suarez "Peloduro", by agreement between the Fundación "Lolita Rubial" and the Intendencia Municipal de Lavalleja, being this property of the Fundación "Lolita Rubial", under the direction of Dr. Gustavo Guadalupe and Prof. Jorge Sayagués and works at the Lavalleja Theatre.

According to the information obtained, its function is to "safeguard and disseminate the work of Uruguayan journalistic media artists, as well as to reclaim caricature and comics as part of the visual arts, fundamental instruments in human communication, witnesses to the history of our time. It also seeks to be a place for training and dissemination on the subject." Its collection includes more than 5,000 original works (approximately 3,500 national and the rest foreign) by more than one hundred national artists and three hundred and seventy artists from fifty-five countries. Of these works, naturally only a small part is on display, that is, about seven hundred, spread across ten rooms. It also has a Graphic Documentation Center, a Works Archive, a Library, and a specialized Newspaper Archive. Organizes, or plans to organize, talks, seminars, conferences, comic strip workshops, and experimental caricature workshops. Finally, organizes and calls for awards, salons, and competitions of a national character: "Caricatures" Competition and of an international character: "Peloduro" International Award, Oscar Abín "Gaucher" International Salon. But, I believe all this refers to the past.

When it was founded, it boasted of being the only country, the third to exist in the Latin American world and one of seven in the world. Naturally, this accounting has already changed and although it is still vaguely indicated as existing in the space of the Lavalleja Theater, in the city of Minas, the truth is that nothing confirms to me its continued openness to the public.

Let's return to its history. Since 1996, the National Postal Administration, in agreement with the Museum, has been publishing a Postal Series in homage to the country's most important deceased graphic artists. To date, works by the following artists have been published: Julio E. Suárez "Peloduro," Geoffrey Foladori "Fola," Emilio Cortinas, Oscar Abín "Gaucher" or "Abín," and Celmar Poumé "Poumé." That same year, it organized a major exhibition on "100 Years of Comics."

In 2000, it created the "Peloduro" Medal. Since August 2003, it has also maintained a Virtual Humor Gallery, which displays selected works from the competitions and exhibitions it organizes. In 2002, on the tenth anniversary of the "Museum of Humor and Comics", the "Lolita Rubial" Foundation convenes the First Edition of the "Peloduro" International Graphic Humor Award. From now on there will be no more information.

As I mentioned, behind the creation of this museum is the Lolita Rubial Foundation, an entity created in 1990 with the intention of revitalizing culture in the city of Minas. Paying homage to the Minuan teacher Dolores Margarita "Lolita" Rubial Taveira, her mission is to be a tool that generates and promotes cultural events that cover all areas of human knowledge. Promote education and through it, the well-being of individuals and the community. Promote a culture of and for peace, based on unrestricted respect for differences, generating bonds of peace and brotherhood between individuals and cultures. In addition to the Museum of Humor and Comics Julio E. Suárez "Peloduro" also manages the National Museum of Engraving, in Minas. Contudo, also, to information about this Fundação fica paralyzed in 2005.

Does this museum still exist, or is it a ghost that remains only in the internet user's memory?

While not strictly a museum within the artistic scope we are addressing, it is still important to mention a space that existed in Colonia del Sacramento, a city created by Portuguese colonists, which is why we have to go to Calle Portugal 191 to visit this institution. It is the Museo del Humor Interactivo (MUHI), that is, a space of the absurd and the grotesque that provides "interactive experiences that revisit the history of comedy, cinema, art, and creativity. Unlike traditional museums, it features exhibitions that invite visitors to participate, take funny photos, and explore laughter through time. The tour is divided into different spaces that encompass graphic humor, cinema, television, and classic elements of comedy."

While not a Museum of Graphic Humor, it is a Museum of Humor or of the Comic.
