Interview with the Duo Behind the Humor.hr Portal

Dear Damir and Dražen,

We would like to warmly invite you to an interview as part of the process of promoting you and your project Humor.hr within the Algebra LAB startup incubator program.

We're looking forward to learning more about your project, your experience so far, and your plans for the future. This interview will help us better understand your vision and the contribution Humor.hr can make to society.

We'd ask you to answer the following questions, and at the end feel free to add anything we haven't covered, or anything you'd simply like to share with us.

1. Please introduce yourselves — who you are, what you do, and how your collaboration on the Humor.hr project began.

I'm Damir Markulj, and professionally I work in the field of non-institutional care and support services. My collaboration with Dražen began at the Croatian Association of Aphorists and Humorists, where Dražen, among other things, edits the humor and satire magazine Uh!Aha, and I help him there as the person in charge of the magazine's graphic design. After I submitted the project for participation in the Algebra LAB startup incubator, I asked him if he'd now help me out a bit. And that's how we started working together.

My name is Dražen Jergović. I'm an electrical engineer by training, working as a design engineer in environmental protection, quality control manager, and I also work in analytics. Humor has drawn me in since I was young, so I accepted Damir's proposal for my involvement with the portal without a second thought. I contribute as much as I can through my many contacts, my experience writing and editing e-magazines on humor and satire, and contributions from fellow collaborators and colleagues. In terms of how we've split up roles, Damir is the graphics and IT expert, while I'm primarily the writer and editor. After joining the Croatian Association of Aphorists and Humorists, the two of us "clicked" in terms of our shared interest in humor and in giving it greater visibility in the media landscape. As the magazine Potepuh, which used to be sold on newsstands in print, was shutting down, we started discussing the possibility of launching a new humor magazine on the market. Three years later, that idea evolved into a digital platform for preserving a cheerful spirit across all age groups — HUMOR.HR.

2. How would you explain to someone hearing about Humor.hr for the first time who consumes humor on social media every day?

I'd put it this way: you know how every day you come across a bunch of great jokes and one-liners, but they all just disappear into endless scrolling? Humor.hr is a place where that humor no longer disappears.

It's a platform that gathers the best of it, gives it context, and gives it staying power. Instead of depending on an algorithm and pure chance, here you come deliberately — looking for good humor.

To me it's like a digital living room of laughter. A place where authors and audiences meet, where humor doesn't get lost but stays around, and where you know you'll always find something to brighten your day.

On this one-of-a-kind portal for good spirits, everyone will find something for themselves, because we pay close attention to the variety of content on offer, how current it is, and how well it adapts to different paces of consumption.

3. What problem did you identify in today's digital space when it comes to humor and its fragmentation?

Humor today is extremely present, but at the same time scattered and fleeting. It lives across different social networks, in comments and short formats that disappear or get forgotten quickly. There's no central place that systematically gathers, archives, and presents quality homegrown humor to an audience. It's precisely that fragmentation, and that dependence on algorithms, that creates the need for a platform that gives humor permanence and context.

We're going to try to bring some order to humor, which is badly needed, and boost its popularity by reviving some forgotten formats that used to be popular. Older readers will be reminded of the "good old days" of spontaneity, while younger generations will get a taste of retro humor and its importance in social life. In that sense, we'll try to combine the old and the modern using today's tools.

4. Why do you think it's important to have a single central place that brings together different humor formats and authors?

A central place allows for clarity, quality, and long-term value in the content. Instead of audiences randomly hunting for humor across different channels, Humor.hr offers a curated selection in one place — jokes, satire, interviews, news from the world of humor. On top of that, the platform gives authors visibility and room to grow, which in turn builds a community.

Different ways of seeing humor — through the eyes of a writer, a musician, a stand-up comedian, a graffiti artist, a journalist, a professor, and so on — will form a strong foundation for raising the concept of "humoristics" to a higher level than before.

5. Editorial selection and content quality are an important part of the platform. How do you balance freedom of expression with keeping a positive, family-friendly tone?

Freedom of expression is important for any humor project, but we believe humor can be smart and sharp without being offensive or destructive. Our editorial criteria are based on quality, wit, and social responsibility. The goal is to preserve each author's authenticity while also making sure the content stays appropriate for a broad audience and doesn't cross the line of good taste.

6. Humor's role in society is often underestimated. How does Humor.hr contribute to users' mental health and everyday mood?

Humor has a proven ability to reduce stress and create a sense of connection. In an age of fast-moving information and negative news, Humor.hr wants to be a space for a breather — a digital place users come to in order to laugh and unwind for a little while. Through the ongoing publication of quality content, we're making a small but meaningful contribution to users' everyday mood and mental hygiene. One of our goals is for people to come back to the portal every day looking for relaxation and a bit of spiritual renewal. To our more mature visitors, we promise longevity; to younger ones, support in developing critical thinking and the independent judgment to decide what is, or isn't, good for them.

7. What have been the biggest challenges in developing the platform — technical, editorial, or related to building a community?

The biggest challenges have been a combination of technical and editorial issues. On the technical side — building a functional, easy-to-navigate platform that can grow. On the editorial side — defining the tone, the quality standard, and the direction of development. Building a community from scratch is also a challenge: attracting the first authors and the first readers requires patience and a clearly defined vision. We have a big fight ahead of us to popularize humor, which fewer and fewer people have seemed drawn to in recent years — and we still need to explore the reasons why, through interaction with our followers.

8. How do you see the future of Humor.hr? Are you planning new formats, audience expansion, or additional ways of supporting homegrown authors?

We see Humor.hr as the central Croatian hub for humor. We plan to develop new formats such as interviews, video content, and themed contests for authors. In the long term, we'd like to build partnerships with theaters, stand-up comedians, and festivals, and to offer additional models of support for authors — through fees, sponsorships, and subscriptions. The goal is to build a sustainable platform that encourages the domestic humor scene. Besides comedic content, we'll also offer articles on the theory of humor in various forms. We'll try to attract and retain followers with brain teasers and AI-generated content, offering them entertaining formats rarely seen elsewhere. For homegrown authors, the portal will serve as a kind of portfolio.

9. You're taking part in the Algebra LAB startup incubator — how would you describe that experience, and what concrete benefits do you consider most valuable for developing Humor.hr?

Taking part in the Algebra LAB incubator provides a structured environment for developing an idea. The most valuable benefits are mentorship support, strategic guidance, and the opportunity to build a business model. The incubator makes it possible to look at the project from an entrepreneurial perspective — not just as a creative idea, but as a sustainable digital product. Sooner or later, a portal that started as a hobby can grow into a serious business, one that gives active, versatile creatives a way to make a living.

10. What experiences or messages would you share with colleagues who are thinking about turning their own ideas into a startup project?

The most important thing is to just get started. Ideas only have value once you begin turning them into reality. The path includes plenty of challenges, but with a clear vision, a willingness to learn, and openness to mentorship, a project can grow and adapt to the market. Passion for the idea has to be the foundation, but discipline and long-term thinking matter just as much. Don't turn down opportunities, be brave, and believe in your ideas — but always stay realistic about what they require.

If there's anything else you'd like to add that the previous questions didn't cover, feel free to write it in.

Don't be a grump — visit HUMOR.hr, because there, it's "laughter at first click."
