Y sé que has hecho muchos monólogos humorísticos.

Me explico.

Interview with Omar Franco

By Pepe Pelayo

Money is not the standard of art

Today we have to publish the “dialogue” that I had with someone considered by me to be a “monster” of Cuban humorous acting: my friend Omar Franco.

I remember him playing the character of a police officer who arrived in Havana from the eastern part of the country and I confess that I was amazed. One of the characteristics of the so-called New Cuban Humor Movement of the 80s of the last century was that we did not come from the world of Academia, except for the Salamanca group; Therefore, acting excellence was not abundant among us. So suddenly finding someone with that tremendous talent was shocking. I was lucky after knowing that we admired and respected each other and from there a beautiful friendship arose until now. It is an honor to have you here for this “dialogue.”

PP: My dear Omar, in order not to have to repeat what a few places in cyberspace say about you, could you introduce yourself, giving us the information that is most important to you that people know about your rich resume in humor?

OMAR: First, thank you for this conversation, more than an interview, where perhaps for the first time, I expressed, from my modest perception of Humor, very personal criteria not expressed before. Second, I am not a fan of interviews, that is why I continue to see this more as a conversation, but coming from you, from Gran Pelayo, friend and admired by the majority of our generation of humor, for your vast knowledge of the genre, not only Cuban but also Spanish-speaking. Also, for the great human being that you are, the least I can do is agree to talk to you and your followers.

If I have to make a summary of my career, almost 30 years in acting, of course, with much greater weight in the comedy genre, I would tell you that I come from the world of engineering, like you, -Electronics, exactly from Automation, which I practiced for 4 years - although I recognize that far from being an engineer, I am now an average technician in that specialty. Although I agree with you on the importance of the contribution of those 5 years of university studies to assume humor in a fairly logical order and acquire study methodology.

For 20 years I have been a member of the Jury of the National Humor Award in Cuba. I have chaired the Jury of the National Humor Festival “Aquelarre” on several occasions.

I have received almost 20 acting awards at national events, including 5 "Caricatos" Awards, the highest annual award conferred by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. Curiously, those five awards in different genres: Cinema, Dramatic Theatre, Comedy Theatre, Humor on Television and Acting for Children on TV. Two International Awards in cinema; the first in 2013 for Best Supporting Actor at the New York International Film Festival, in the film "Pablo." The second, Award for Best Leading Actor at the 2013 Puerto Rico International Film Festival, in the film "Penumbras". Other Collective Awards, as a member of the "Humoris Causa" Group and the "Vivir del Cuento" program.

In Cinema I have acted in 17 feature films and 6 short films. I have provided voices in 5 ICAIC Animated Animations. On Television I have acted in children's programs, police programs, teleplays. In addition, for 6 years I have been part of the "Vivir del Cuento" collective, a humorous program with the highest audience in Cuba and which has been on the small screen for 12 years.

In the dramatic theater I would like to mention three leading performances in the works "Penumbras", by Amado del Pino, directed by Osvaldo Doimeadios; Freddie by Abilio Estévez, directed by Carlos Díaz and Vientos de Cuaresma, by Leonardo Padura, directed by Tony Díaz. I have also made several presentations on stages in Colombia, Mexico, the US, Venezuela and Spain.

And I was born on May 7, back in 1965, of course, “in the bosom of a humble family.”

PP: Tremendous resume, my friend. I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart for what you have achieved. And now let's start talking about what we are passionate about... Look, from the beginning you had your own stamp, you were always seen as a great actor and that applied to a good humorous script that you knew how to choose well, turned you from the moment I met you into a great of the genre, as I already said. And I know you've done a lot of stand-up comedy. That's why I ask you: How have the reactions of the new generations (especially those who practice stand up comedy) been when you show them that intelligent and character-level humor that you know how to do? I think I know the answer, because I know that you are doing very well, but I am interested in you expanding a little on the theorization of this point for the readers of "Humor Sapiens."

OMAR: Pelayo, this topic of stand up comedy has been discussed quite a bit, but for the first time, explicitly, I will address it publicly.

I think this way of delivering humor on stage is one of the most difficult moments for any comedian. I base this statement on the fact that, first, according to studies by psychologists and communication specialists, it is super difficult to reach the majority of people in a wide audience. Second, for actors, the monologue is the greatest challenge when it comes to acting on stage, or in front of a camera, and if in the end the task of that actor is to make people laugh, of course stand up comedy is a great challenge. for any comedian.

How did I assume this modality? My training as a comic actor basically started in humorous groups, where mostly in our presentations we staged sketch, small theatrical pieces, and to a lesser extent, small monologues, almost always hidden behind some theatrical mask. In my particular case, I assumed this form of stand up comedy, when our project "Humoris Causa" ended in 2005. I remember that it was very difficult, but I already had the essential tools to present myself in front of an audience, and make them laugh from Omar Franco, without unfolding myself. I admit that at that moment it paved the way for me to be already known to the public who followed humor in Cuba.

Where did the biggest challenge come from? Abroad. Of course Pelayo, you must have a lot of experience on the subject, especially in your first jobs in Chile. When I talk about challenge it is literally, first because our Cuban life is very atypical for Spanish speakers in this world who do not know our country, and second, because of the fact that it is not even moderately known to some audiences outside of Cuba. That created barriers for me. And here I return to the introduction of your question where you touched on the topic of text selection. I have always been very rigorous in that and I think it is an important card that any comedian must play in the different scenarios that arise when taking on stand up comedy. And I take this opportunity to mention with great pride that one of the texts, which "Humoris Causa" took on as a letter of introduction abroad, was "Los Presos" by that great mutual friend Aramís Quintero and one of the people I have met with a tremendous sense of humor.

Summarizing the topic of stand up comedy, I can tell you that after several years of having included this variant in my presentations, the results have not been unsatisfactory at all, although if they put me “between a rock and a hard place”, I will take the variant of hiding behind a character to make people laugh from a stage.

PP: Excuse me, Omar, but I'm going to give you my opinion before getting into another topic. I have already said publicly that stand up comedy is just another theatrical modality, as valid as any other. However, since it is not necessary to master much acting language and theatrical language, many mediocre people “sneak” into that party. Luckily, there are excellent exponents of stand up comedy, but unfortunately what is most abundant is mediocrity. Comedians like you, with your acting talent and artistic vision, it is surely easier for you to do stand up comedy. But I insist, that is not abundant. What grows like weeds are those “comedians” who stand in front of a microphone to humiliatingly criticize someone, to say vulgarities and to present themselves as all-knowing gods who paternally teach us Good and Evil, because they are above that. . Deep down they are maybe just nice people, but I don't see them as true comedians. I respect humor a lot. Hence the enormous difference between the great practitioners of stand up comedy and the majority who make up “the others.” The art of the comedian is not easy to do, my friend. You know it very well. And I take this opportunity now to address a different aspect of the topic: we know that there are differences between a dramatic performance and a humorous one. I don't want to put you in the position of telling me which of the two you prefer, but I would like you to delve deeper into the inner pleasure and level of fulfillment that the two provoke in you (the differences, not the similarities).

OMAR: Act the tragedy or act the comedy? Which is my favorite? In fact, it is not a secret, I have said it on other occasions: I prefer THE TRAGEDY, although some might assume otherwise. What happens is that I am super grateful to LA COMEDIA. I am one of those who defend this idea, perhaps hackneyed but very real, that making people laugh is very difficult, and is even something very serious, especially when you assume it with artistic responsibility, although some think that Humor does not belong to Art. Genuine. By the way, how many comedians have not been asked: “I see that you like to make people laugh, but what do you do?”

Pelayo, this dichotomy in my acting has been a topic in other interviews, however, you touch on a very interesting aspect, not previously questioned, and it is precisely the section on the differences between both genres of acting in my particular case. I would start with a little reflection, and then like any good dermatologist, “I'll get to the point.”

My maxim has always been to ACT, and assuming comic or tragic roles has always started from here. It hasn't been easy at all. At the beginning it took me many hours of study, with certain risks, because not having been trained in Art Schools, I prepared myself self-taught. At the same time, I rehearsed and performed with the "Grupo Teatro XXI", directed by Armando Suárez Del Villar, to whom I owe much of my acting training. Luckily for me, in that group I shared the scene with actors like Luis Alberto García (father), Hilda Oates, René De la Cruz (father), all National Theater Awards. There were three years - from '92 to '95 - in which I stayed away from humor, precisely doing pure theater. When I rejoined the world of humor in 1995, I set out to reorganize my future as an actor, but with the idea of not pigeonholing myself only in comedy.

With that little introduction to my answer, I can tell you that the inner pleasure I feel when working in both genres is very similar, although with some different nuances. This difference has almost always been based on the possibility of having been able to achieve a better performance in my current character. As an example, I would tell you that, since in recent times I have done more comedy than tragedy, I have had some dissatisfaction with my tragic characters, because sometimes some veins of comedy have emerged. As a good comedian you know that we have vices, gags, appoggiaturas of comic characters, from which, sometimes, it is very difficult to get rid of.

In my opinion, there are several differences between both genders. It would begin with that first step of assuming the text to interpret on stage. Normally in the dramatic, we start from works or texts by writers who create for theater that for many directors are immovable. Of course, there are exceptions. It does not happen in the same way in humor, where on many occasions, written texts have a high level of variability, from the moment the writer delivers them. On the other hand, the rigor of rehearsal and preparation in dramatic theater has a much higher level, in general, with respect to humor. I repeat, there are exceptions. Coupled with this, the use of all the theatrical components for a staging - lighting design, soundtrack, use of the entire stage space, etc. - is much greater in drama than in humor. Specifically in terms of acting, the level of preparation and concentration on the part of the actors before going on stage, I have generally perceived it more rigorously in drama. I have a few anecdotes on the subject.

Regarding the audience, a marked difference is the great silence that is felt in the theater when you are playing a tragic character, something that my ears and mind had to adapt to. When you're playing a comic character, what you almost always get from the audience is laughter and applause.

In the same way, when leaving the theater, in a tragic play, the faces of the audience and their expressions are generally not those of joy. On the contrary, when you finish doing humor, the audience leaves very happy and remembering jokes or comic scenes. There are exceptions, sometimes humorous works are presented that are tragedies.

Although you are not asking for similarities, I want to tell you one at least, the most important one for us actors, and that is the gift of applause at the end of each performance.

PP: My friend, I want to comment on the exceptions you mention. I explain. For me the rigor, both of rehearsal, staging, lighting, stagecraft, etc., etc., is identical in tragedy as in comedy. I learned it with the job that my group "La Seña del Humor" gave me. I'll give you two examples, when Jorge Guerra trained us at the beginning of "La Seña", we saw how that field was opening up for us. Until that moment we were Cuban fuckers playing theater (afterwards we continued to be the same fuckers, but with more skill, obviously). Jorge Guerra was a detail keeper when it came to directing actors and I saw how he stopped at – for me – irrelevant things when he created characters for us. Things that, seeing the whole package later, you understood why he did that. And two, on one occasion, to put together a number that Aramís and I wrote, we decided that our friend Armando Crespo, an artistic director of the "Teatro Mirón Cubano", directed by Albio Paz, would put it on, because another level of acting and address. With him I learned even more the rigor of a setting worth its salt. Without a doubt, what we did in that New Humor Movement was historical, but in terms of new content, style of humor, etc., but we lacked the rigor of true theater, except for some as you say. The curious thing is that with that “lightness” when doing theatrical humor, so many achievements were obtained. Without a doubt, that type of disruptive humor that we did and perhaps the historical social conditions were the causes (let others study that, because maybe I'm super wrong). Hence I think that for that reason it may seem to us that it is less rigorous (to continue with the term) to make humor. So, so that readers do not get confused, when there is top-notch artistic quality, such as "Les Luthiers", "Tricicle", etc., or dramatic theater groups of excellence, the rigor is the same for the drama as for the tragedy. Those are the exceptions that I imagine you raise. But since the renowned New Cuban Humor Movement of the 80s came to light, I have to ask you about it. You were part of that.

Therefore, you can speak with authority on the matter. So I ask you: Did that Movement disappear? Because? Are there colleagues who continue to fly those flags? And for you to elaborate: look, before the humor of that Movement arose, obviously, another humor was created. And after the Movement, another humor has been created, more similar to the humor of before than to the one we did in the 80s and first half of the 90s. Why, if apparently what is common and abundant is that humor from before and after, Was the acceptance of our different humor so strong in that limited period of time?

OMAR: Addressing the Humor Movement of the 80s is a pleasure, and that is why I will be happy to talk about the subject, and answer your questions as briefly as possible.

First, this humor movement emerged as a social need, in the same way that in those times, in other manifestations of Cuban culture, new trends and artistic movements emerged. In the 80s there was a generation between 20 and 30 years old, eager for a new aesthetic in stage humor, and little by little this movement emerged, which at first was largely nourished by Universities. For this reason, an avant-garde platoon emerged, among which were the "Congreso Nacional de Espectáculos", "La Seña del Humor", "Salamanca", "Nos y otros", just to mention four. That movement grew in quantity and quality, becoming a proposal in the 80s, which caused theaters to collapse, not only in Havana. In my modest perception, the humor that was generated in those years was a before and after in Cuban humor, without detracting in any way from the great comedians who preceded that moment, who were quite a few. Today, several of them are National Humor Awards, from which several comedians have been nourished. Closing this introduction to the subject, I would tell you that the Humor Movement of the 80s was advancing very well in its artistic dreams internally, and in the acceptance of the general public externally. It was an example that justifies that famous phrase: “alone we go faster, but together we go further.”

It was an example that justifies that famous phrase: “alone we go faster, but together we go further.”

Then came the Special Period in Cuba. Beginning the last decade of the 20th century, our country was hitting rock bottom, some said “even with glue.” The truth was that this disaster of the Cuban economy reached every corner, and of course to the cultural sphere, and with it, to humor. The comedy groups gradually disintegrated, even groups with solid results. In fact, the four previously mentioned did not withstand the onslaught of those times. Many of its members moved on to other jobs, others emigrated, and many others chose to continue clinging to the resurrection of the Humor Movement of the 80s. That disintegration of groups caused an anarchy of humor in the early years of the 90s. , and almost all the interesting proposals that had previously been generated began to be lost from the theaters. The humor largely moved to nighttime places, places where, in general, you found a type of humor far removed from that aesthetic achieved by the Movement we are talking about. Something that was to be expected, the product of an inverted pyramid, in which money for leisure was generally not in the pockets of that large, demanding and humor-loving public of the 80s.

Then, in 1995, the Humor Promotion Center emerged, directed in its early years by Osvaldo Doimeadiós, who like his successors, little by little tried to rescue those good vibes of the 80s, in the midst of new social conditions at the doors. XXI century. Almost finishing, I can tell you that that different humor, delivered by that Movement of the 80s, and of which you were a part, being leader of "La Seña del Humor de Matanzas", today continues to be missed by a part of those generations that enjoyed it, and it is an obligatory reference for those of us who dedicate ourselves to humor in Cuba.

PP: To continue with the “rigority”, when you say “the Humor Promotion Center emerged in 1995”, I clarify for those who do not know, that the Center was founded by Virulo years ago and I believe that in 90 he went to live in Mexico and left a triumvirate at the head of the Center: maestro Carlos Ruiz de la Tejera, Doimeadiós and I. That lasted a few days, because Carlos and I did not want to continue and luckily Doime did. And due to his great performance, the Ministry of Culture gave official support to the Center in that year 1995. But let's leave history and go to the present. I am obliged to ask you about controversial issues of fashion: is it better or worse to do so-called white humor, than to do humor? acidic, aggressive, provocative? And, of course, are there limits to humor? And if there are, what are they?

OMAR: Very interesting question, and of course, in our direction, there will be as many answers as there are comedians entrenched in their style.

I start by saying that I respect all ways of making people laugh, even those that may seem cruder to me. I reiterate that I simply respect every way of trying to cheer up a person or an audience. The same thing happens to me with religion, I respect them all. The thing about humor is that I have been very clear for many years about what kind of humor I would never do, of course I will not dwell on the latter, and I will answer you below about white humor. I consider that in the same way that making people laugh is very difficult, within the colors of humor, white is one of the most difficult shades to achieve the laughter dreamed of by comedians. For me it is better to do white humor than the rest of the types of humor you mention, I have proven it with my work. The acidic, aggressive and provocative has never been in the humor that I have defended on stage. In my comfort zone, when acting I always keep in mind absolute respect for the audience, my role on stage while I act and select the most suggestive texts that my interlocutor can enjoy. I do not consider it valid to divert attention towards any spectator,

trying to take the pressure off while I'm on stage. Pelayo, if in all the previous analysis I had used money as a standard, I could tell you that in this 21st century in Cuba several comedians have used that type of humor, acid, aggressive and provocative in a profitable way and I respect their choice, but for taste, the colors and for humor, the public. Personally, since I started in this world of acting, I have always been convinced that money is not the standard of art.

Regarding the limits of humor, I would tell you the following: considering humor as an intrinsic part of the culture of human beings in this world of ours, I do not believe that there are limits to humor, just as I do not see limits to the creation in the art of general way. Where do limits begin to be set for me?: when in artistic creation the personal ethics of each artist are taken hand in hand. Without any intention of philosophizing, for which I am also not prepared, I will give you an example. This pandemic that has hit us for a year has caused millions of deaths. You and I would not see in these deaths a shortcut to provoke laughter, but in this world of ours someone will appear, who, defending black humor at all costs, provokes laughter with such a sensitive topic, and I say provoke because there will always be those who enjoy that type of humor. That's why I tell you that in this unlimited world of humorous creativity the limits will be set by the human ethics of each artist.

PP: I agree with you and we agree on almost everything, there is a reason we have similar tastes in the art of making people laugh. Without a doubt, white humor is the most difficult to create, and perhaps the most “intelligent.” As for the limits, I rounded off the last part of your answer, because I know you will agree with me: you can make humor out of anything. Even the blackest. The thing is the intentions of the one who does it. I have told jokes about characters with cancer, to people who really suffer from it (in my "Chaplin Talks" that I have given in Hospital Centers), but after explaining how healing it is to laugh at everything (even their misfortune) and They already know that what I do is not a joke (one of my sisters even died of cancer). I insist, everything depends on the intentions of the source that the receiver detects... but let's leave the point to delve into another time and tell me now the following: what are your preferences in humor, your favorite comedians (national and foreign) in the scene, the graphics, the literary, the audiovisual, etc.? And if you have been influenced by someone(s), of course.

OMAR: This question is of course the most complex to answer, because by having to mention names, some of the national humor whose work I admire are inevitably excluded, because the list would become very extensive.

I start with the Cuban stage comedians and of them I choose five with whom I have shared the stage in Cuba and abroad: Virulo, Doimeadios, Alexis Valdés, Iván Camejo -almost 15 years together in "Humoris Causa"-, and Luis Silva, who In the last decade he has been the most popular comedian in the media for Cubans.

The Cuban humorous groups of my preference are the "Congreso Nacional de Espectáculos", "La Seña del Humor de Matanzas", "Salamanca".

My favorite foreign comedian: Charles Chaplin. Foreign comedy group of my preference: "Les Luthiers".

In graphic humor: Ares, Manuel Hernández -otherwise, from Matanzas-, René de la Nuez. And since the 80s I have admired the caricature of a mutual friend: Ramón Carrillo.

In Cuban literary humor: Héctor Zumbado, Enrique Núñez Rodríguez and Alberto Luberta.

From my generation: Eduardo Del Llano, Aramís Quintero, Telo, Jaime Fort, Miguel Moreno and Jorge Bacallao.

In national audiovisuals: "Behind the Facade", "San Nicolás del Peladero", "Sabadazo" and "Vivir del Cuento".

In foreign audiovisuals: "No one lives here" and "Friends."

Of course this has been the most complex answer and it will make many colleagues with whom I have shared humor for almost three decades think, but believe me, if not, the list would have been too extensive.

PP: Several of the ones you named are also my favorites. Hey, and in a humorous way, what would you like to do that you haven't done?

OMAR: Honoring my last name, frankly in terms of humor I would have liked at some point to have played one of those characters that Aramís Quintero, Pablo Gari (Pible) or Marcos Mundstock brought to the stage with so much sobriety and humor.

PP: Very good. I don't think it will be difficult for you to achieve it at some point. Well, and to close this dialogue: what question that I didn't ask you would you have liked to answer? And can you answer it now too?

OMAR: The question I would have liked to answer is: do you think that one day in a theater in Cuba we can meet comedians from that prestigious Movement of the last century and perform for the Cuban public alongside outstanding comedians of this 21st century?

My response: I hope that one day we can do it and at the end of the performance we can receive from our audience the great gift called APPLAUSE.

And to say goodbye I tell you: Gran Pelayo is also one of my favorites and one of my obligatory references in true Humor. I wish we could act together, I assure your readers that they will like this pairing much more than this interview. Thank you for your interesting questions and for your Great Humor. Hug.

PP: My brother, regarding the question you asked yourself, I answer that I would also like that to happen. It would be ideal. And as for your final wish, I give you my word that I would love it too. An honor and a great pleasure to get on stage with you, an icon of Cuban good humor of all time, and share with you the laughter and applause of the audience.

Thank you very much for your time and willingness to “dialocate”. I liked that you felt comfortable and safe enough to say and confess things that were so important to you and to Cuban humor in general. A big hug.
