Si no, nervios.

Interview with Luis Pescetti

By Pepe Pelayo

Humor is a celebration of life

Luis Pescetti is an “all-terrain”, “multimedia” creator. He writes books for children and adults, composes songs for children and adults, is a singer and guitarist, writes poetry for children and adults; He is a teacher, game guide, actor, and a thousand other things, the same in a humorous way (I think the majority of his work), but he also ventures into “the serious” and in an excellent way, by the way. For those who do not know, his harvest of awards, distinctions and recognitions, both in his country and internationally, is enormous and impressive.

I met him in Cuba in the 80s, when he visited the Island. I was amazed tosee him in his presentations. I am referring to his “angel” (vis comic), his sense of humor, his good taste, his sense of play, his command of the public and versatility. I was lucky enough to perform in theater with him (with my group La Seña del Humor) and to share privately. We became friends, but his tour of Cuba ended and since there were no emails or social networks at that time, we lost track. But when I lived in Chile we met again and there our friendship strengthened and at this moment we can say that we are great friends, one of those that are difficult to find in life. And friendship, obviously, made us both know even the details of our careers in humor. Both in Chile, Mexico and Argentina we have shared microphones and stages. That is why it is difficult for me to do this “dialogue”. What to ask him that he doesn't know? So I decided to try to satisfy certain points that may interest the majority of our “humornauts” and not just colleagues. Let's hope so.

PP: Luis, you have an enviable career in humor, so I'll start by asking you how you realized that your work was going along those lines, as a child? As a professional? Did someone show you the way?

PESCETTI: As a child I remember walking through the town during naps and pretending to answer interviews; but I had no idea of the way. When I was a teenager I started making comics and writing poems, and I suppose everything exploded with force when I learned about Gianni Rodari's “Grammar of Fantasy”. With him I started training as a gymnast, developing my creativity. I had many good allies, but not an academic career, rather a long personal search.

PP: Rodari is the best, yes, and surely others influenced your training even without realizing it. But if you had not had that innate talent, and had not become aware of the importance of improving yourself from every point of view, of making an effort, of always learning, of experimenting, of taking risks despite temporary difficulties, etc., you would not have reached where you have arrived But tell me, how do you see the difference between the humor you did in your beginnings and what you do today? I mean if you think it has evolved a lot, or you definitely changed to something else.

PESCETTI: More acidic and more naive at the same time, was my initial mood. More naive because I rehearsed with everything I had at hand and discovered, and more acidic because it allowed me a rawness that I no longer feel now. It was the time of the dictatorship in Argentina, and the time that followed. Humor was really a very powerful form of expression, human and civic.

PP: I am a witness to the evolution of your humor, from the 90s of the last century to what you currently do and I confess that I see differences, of course, but I really love it in both moments; That is to say, I don't think there is much difference between both extremes (I'm not referring to artistic elaboration or maturity, I'm talking about the type of humor, the exquisite humor that you create). And also, as I said at the beginning, I have witnessed you performing for thousands of people on the same stage in three different countries and I have always been impressed by the excellent audience management that you demonstrate on stage. That's why I ask you: if you have succeeded in live performances with audiences as different as Argentine, Cuban, Mexican, Spanish and others, does it mean that you prepare specifically for each place? Do you have to adapt your humor for each audience?

PESCETTI: I don't prepare myself, except to know if there is any word that could lead to a misunderstanding. I think there are two reasons for what you are saying: the first is that childhood is more universal, in its codes, its problems, parenthood has very similar needs, fears and joys between those countries. Education, too, follows similar paths and therefore leads to similar achievements and clumsiness, and that's where one slips through.

And the other reason, no less important, is that what you knew is the distillation of many years of acting in small, shady, unknown places. There were hundreds and hundreds of shows where I was finding my own voice, which in my case coincides with playing with a large audience, almost as if I were in a one-on-one relationship.

PP: And to what you say I add: and the universality of your humor, of your work, because you penetrate the human being in general, wherever he lives and whatever training and culture he has. That's why your triumphs. That moment of success in front of so many people is incredible, isn't it? By the way, can you describe your moods before, during and after a big presentation? a) A few hours before going on stage. b) A few minutes before going on stage. c) Entering the scene. d) If you see that the audience laughs from the beginning. e) If you see that the pubic is somewhat difficult. f) Upon receiving the final applause. g) When you leave the place of the presentation and leave the experience behind you.

PESCETTI: It depends if the place is new or well-known, if I know that the seats have been sold out for days or we are at the limit. But if everything is fine, I go on stage as if it were, almost, very naturally. I go from being in the dressing room to the show. If not, nerves.

If they laugh from the beginning it is like entering a state of play, in which I can interrupt the script, move forward, change, I play with the show itself. If not: I stick much more to the script, the same if they are difficult.

With the final applause, I always feel very grateful, that moment is lucky and I often dedicate it to my parents. Also as if he were loading the tank for Luis who is burdened with everyday life: take this, remember this.

And leaving and leaving behind always has something of an implosion, a certain emptiness, unless we go with the band to share and comment. That's a bit why I invented the long moments of signing and greeting. To land.

PP: And I know of the long lines asking for your autograph, the dedication to the book or the album, or a simple handshake, or the exchange of a phrase, or a selfie. So, my friend, as the multifaceted, successful, award-winning and popular comedian that you are, how do you handle fame?

PESCETTI: Pelayo, I find that question funny, because I don't experience it that way. I spend my time working every day, and looking for the song or book that still leaves me hungry almost intact. And, in any case, that is what I take care of most: that my belly does not fill with reluctance.

PP: I knew your answer like almost all the others, as I noted in the introduction, but it is something interesting for many to know. Of course, I didn't count on your shyness and modesty at this point. But believe me, I was referring to something beyond the showy or superficial. Let's change then to another aspect that at least matters to me a lot: do you feel more comfortable doing children's humor or humor for adults?

PESCETTI: Without a doubt the children's one, and that, if you look closely, there is almost no humor for adults now on stage or on screens, the only thing left was the American sitcom model, or series that are comedies, but nothing more. For adults, I feel very happy doing these poetry and song or music recitals.

PP: Absolutely right, I also think that adult humor is going through a moment that is not to my liking. So, in that same vein: which do you prefer to create, literary humor, musical humor, scenic humor or audiovisual humor?

PESCETTI: Literary and musical. The audiovisual is foreign to me, I am a guest, and the stage: it happens, in the interaction with the public.

PP: I mentioned audiovisual because you have created a lot for radio and television, but it is true that you mostly put what you do in the others based on those languages. Well, after all, it's all humor, right? And that brings me to the following: without looking for the academic definition, what is humor for you, according to your long and fruitful experience?

PESCETTI: A celebration of life, of the joy of living. It's like dancing because you're happy: you do humor because you're full, joyful, with vitality.

PP: Very good definition of humor. But I'll go to something more formal, because I can't help but ask you a very "fashionable" topic: what are the limits of humor, in your opinion. Can one laugh at everything in life and specifically in art?

PESCETTI: You can laugh at everything, if you don't mind being a brute or ethically clumsy, at everything. But you and I care, a lot. So my limit is in the relationship of authority or power. I can make a joke towards someone who has more authority or power than me, and it is my legitimate way of expression, etc.; but towards someone who has less power or authority, no; because that would be abuse. Imagine if I am a native of a country, and I make fun of immigrants who are going through difficulties, it is an abuse of power, it is done with humor, or humor is the tool, but that is it.

PP: We agree, but referring to humor as mockery, as criticism, as satire, obviously. To finish, what would you like to do or achieve within humorous art that you have not done or achieved yet?

PESCETTI: My answer is paradoxical, but yes: a television program, about the same thing I do, humor about living together as a family; but also humor and philosophy for children.

PP: And I'm sure you will. And I wouldn't miss it for the world. Well, Luis, it has been a great pleasure as always when we talk “seriously” and more about something as serious as humor. Thank you very much for your very limited time and your effort to please me. We continue as always. A big hug.
